Brompton Expands Fully Automated Hire Points Network
LONDON, UK – Brompton Bike Hire announced more seven hire points called Docks will be rolled out over the summer. This will include two new London locations as well as in Birmingham and Bristol. Brompton Docks were officially launched in 2011 with the stated aim of becoming the only bicycle scheme in the world to operate without government grants or subsidies.
Brompton Bike Hire is the sister company of UK folding bike manufacturer Brompton and is responsible for arranging manufacture and operating the Docks which are self-contained, fully automated secure hire points for scheme members.
Members can join via a dedicated website and then can organise bike hire in advance by receipt of a text message that allocates a given bike in a given dock with a PIN used for unlocking.
All hire bikes are M3L models, featuring hub gears and dynamo lighting. Public hire Docks are usually located at or near train stations. There are also a number of ‘private’ Docks available for exclusive institutional use, for example at BSkyB and GlaxoSmithKline sites in London, and the company has an active corporate member scheme.
Today the Brompton folding bikes are sold in 45 countries around the world and over 80% of production is exported. The company says it is on target to produce 50,000 bikes this year.
