China Invests in Wonder Material Graphene
BEIJING, China – According to China’s official government press agency Xinhua the country is working on founding the China International Graphene Industry Union. After the EU announced a one billion euro subsidy program for the development of Graphene applications and products now also China is focusing on this wonder material that Vittoria already uses in its tyres and wheels.
Graphene is viewed by China’s central authorities as a key material in the national innovation-driven development strategy. That’s why the country is setting up the China International Graphene Industry Union
Platform for cooperation
The Graphene Industry Union is being set-up as a non-governmental organization (NGO). It must be established by September this year. According to the national press agency, “It will be a platform for international and domestic cooperation among businesses, researchers and financial institutions.” The agency quoted the union’s first director-general Zhang Jingan who said this at a preparatory meeting last week.
Commercializing research findings
He further said that the China International Graphene Industry Union will set evaluation and quality standards for the industry and lay the foundation for research and business development, and help commercialize research findings.
Industrialization of graphene
Graphene, a thin layer of carbon atoms in a honeycomb lattice, is known for its unusual electrical, chemical and mechanical properties. China is one of the most graphite-rich countries and a leader in the industrialization of graphene.
Integrating graphene in bike products
Such industrialization happened already within the bicycle industry for a number of products by Vittoria. The company holds distribution rights for various countries of pristine graphene nanoplatelets. The tyre and wheelset producer managed to integrate graphene into tyres and composite material for carbon wheelsets. Numerous possibilities are there for other companies in the bike industry to integrate graphene in their line-ups as it brings unprecedented features to carbon frames, other composite products, textiles, as well as electric (e-bike) parts – because graphene is also a superconductor.
