NuVinci Partners with Conti and Cobi for E-Bike Components Integration
HANNOVER, Germany – In close cooperation with Fallbrook Technologies, Continental developed a mid-motor with an integrated NuVinci stepless automatic transmission which was recently introduced at Cycle Union’s dealer show, launching partner of the system. On top of that Fallbrook Technologies recently presented its innovative smartbike system developed together with Cobi.
The combination of the NuVinci Hamony Optimized automatic shifting solution, the Harmony H|Sync, with the Cobi smartphone-based cockpit and thumb controller, the two components suppliers are raising the bar in bringing intelligent, connected technologies into the e-bike industry.
‘Internet of Things’ and e-bikes
“Regardless of age, today’s consumers live in a connected world and enjoy a ‘smart’ lifestyle, surrounded by the ‘Internet of Things’. Together with Cobi we are pushing the boundaries of the riding experience with smart technology,” says Fallbrook’s CEO and Chairman, William G Klehm III.
“With the Cobi smartphone-based cockpit, cyclists can listen to their favourite music by connecting to apps such as Spotify or Apple music, use the turn-by-turn navigation system, access real-time fitness data, connect fitness apps and sensors, and take or make phone calls. The built-in thumb controller provides convenience and safety because consumers are not forced to take their hands off the handlebars or their eyes off the road. It also comes with additional functions such as phone charging, automatic light, alarm system, and bell. The Cobi system provides integration with the Brose, Impulse, and TranzX systems, through the automotive communication standard CAN bus technology.”
E-bike drive system integration
The second important development partner for NuVinci Cycling is Continental and as a result of this partnership the two companies recently presented the 48er Revolution motor unit. This results in an all new riding experience thanks to the almost completely automatic ride as the mid-motor features an integrated stepless NuVinci transmission.
This 2 in 1 integration offers some additional technical advantages, too. There are fewer interfaces between drivetrain components, and bike handling is improved thanks to the low centre of gravity. Also, the rear wheel is easier to access and refit for servicing. Power transmission to the rear wheel can be either by chain or via belt drive. Both the 48er Revolution and the 48er Prime motor units produce an maximum torque of 70 Nm while the battery has a capacity of 600 Wh.
Cycle Union launching partner
Rainer Gerdes, Director of Marketing and Product Management of launching partner Cycle Union, said: “Here at e-bike manufaktur we have been through a period of intensive product development, and we are now proud to be powering forward with the new Continental drive system. Our ground-up revamp of the product portfolio was also driven by the imperative that all future models should have battery-integrated frame designs. We have invested heavily in this premium product line: the central element consists of a single moulded frame via a casting process. The objective for this design was to exceed all of our requirements regarding rigidity and safety.”
