E-Bike Sale Booms in France
PARIS, France – In 2017, the total French bike market has registered a slight growth while the e-bike sales nearly doubled. According to the French bicycle observatory, the sales of regular bicycles and e-bikes combined increased to 2,782,000 units with an average price of € 459 (+ 9%). E-bike sales hiked by 90% to approximately 255.000 units.
According to the French bicycle observatory, which is made up by the industry federation Union Sport & Cycle, the total market volume was 2,782,000 regular bicyclers and e-bikes in 2017, an increase of only 0.2% compared with 2016. In turnover, the French market made a much bigger step forward as a result of the e-bike boom. It increased by 9.5% from 1.166 bn euro in 2016 to 1.278 bn euro last year.
In 2017 the French e-bike market showed spectacular growth. The average price of all e-bikes sold in France stands now at € 1,564. The French bicycle observatory excluded speed pedelecs until now. However next year the speed pedelec together with the rapidly growing category of e-cargo bikes will be included. Urban and Trekking models continued to be the main e-bike categories with 220.000 units sold in 2017. Relatively the e-MTB generated the biggest growth as sales volume reached over 35,000 in 2017 compared to only 15,000 in 2016.
E-bikes; more huge growth to come
Jérôme Valentin, CEO of Cycleurope France and co-chairman of the Union Sport & Cycle federation expects an ongoing huge growth in the next few years, as he said during the presentation in the Paris’ City Hall. “Based on projection the French e-bike category should reach a total of 1 million units representing a 35% market share in the next seven years.
For the second consecutive year, the French market study is based on new methodology. In 2016 the market figures have been re-estimated to representative the market much better. “With this new methodology, we are also closer to the methods used in the other European countries,” said Valentin.
P&A market highly competitive
Also on the P&A market sales were very positive with a growth in value of 6% to € 749 million. Competition between various distribution channels is very strong. IBDs hold a market share of 34%, while the multisport chains take 35% of the market and Internet approximately 28%. E-bikes, bicycles and P&A combined, the French market generated a turnover of 2.027 billion euro last year, up 0,2% compared to 2016.
