German Bicycle Exports Increased by 11 Percent
BERLIN, Germany – E-bike sales in Germany continues to outperform this year. According to the latest estimates of the German industry association ‘Zweirad Industrie Verband’ (ZIV) around 670,000 units were sold in the first half of 2018. For 2018 ZIV expects a total sales volume of 850,000 e-bikes, an increase of 18 percent compared to last year.
“Excellent weather conditions in the first half of this year created an ideal market situation for cycling,” reported the ZIV in their market update yesterday. “As a result, the market for bicycles, e-bikes, components and accessories developed positively.”
Between January and June the sale of bicycle and e-bikes increased by 6 percent to 2.8 million units. In the same period the production of bicycles and e-bikes was slightly up compared to 2017 to an estimated 1.33 million (+ 1.9 percent) units. The import of bicycles and e-bikes to Germany increased by more than 10 percent to around 2.17 million. The total import share of e-bikes between January and June was approximately 25 percent. The German bicycle industry was even more successful on the export market which increased by 11 percent to 730,000 units of which 248,200 were e-bikes.
