Speed Pedelec Sales Shows Steady Growth in The Netherlands

Sales & Trends

DOETINCHEM, the Netherlands – The sale of speed pedelecs shows a close to 8 percent growth this year. This is what happened in the Netherlands during 11 months of 2018. As it is unclear what’s happening throughout Europe with regard to the rise of this e-bike category; market developments in Holland can be considered as an indicator for more countries. And in particular for those countries that have a mature e-bike market. Striking is the fact that speed pedelecs are already claiming a respectable market share.

In the January – November 2018 period the sale of speed pedelecs accounted for a 14.7 percent share of the Dutch market for 50cc scooters and mopeds. Speed pedelecs are considered to be mopeds. In EU’s technical and legal framework speed pedelecs are categorized as L1e-B vehicles which stands for mopeds with maximum speed of 45 km/h and 4 kW.

With such power and speed characteristics speed pedelecs must comply to EU’s type-approval regulation that came into force 1 January 2017. For a complete, but manageable overview on what this is all about, see Bike Europe’s Whitepaper on Rules & Regulations on Electric Cycles in the European Union. It offers guidelines on pressing issues when designing, developing, sourcing, distributing and selling e-bikes, pedelecs and speed pedelecs on the European markets.

15 percent market share in 2 years

It’s interesting to note that since the entry into force of the type approval regulation on 1 January 2017, Speed Pedelecs are on the rise in the Netherlands. In less than two years, up to November 2018, they have managed to obtain a 14.7 percent share of the moped market.

This growth occurs during a period of decline for the total moped market in the Netherlands. This (for the main part) 50cc scooter market shows a sales drop of 15.6 percent to a total number of 16,414 scooters, mopeds and speed pedelecs sold.
