Schaeffler Re-Invents the E-Bike With ‘Bio-Hybrid’
LAS VEGAS, USA – Schaeffler’s close to production-ready Bio-Hybrid was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this week as a new form of personal urban mobility that basically re-invents the electric bike. “We have taken all the advantages of a bike and got rid of all the disadvantages such as instability,” said Schaeffler at the CES in Las Vegas. Market launch is planned for 2020.
The CES is the annual show case for companies to present their innovative technologies. One of them is the German company Schaeffler, which is in the of transition process from an automotive and industrial supplier to a developer of proprietary mobility solutions.
Question is how Schaeffler’s ‘Bio-Hybrid’ is to be categorized to meet European rules & regulations?
Schaeffler described the Bio-Hybrid as a car based on an e-bike powertrain. Essentially it is a weather protected four-wheel bike that can be powered by battery or pedaling. It can carry one or two people. The Bio-Hybrid also comes in a pick-up or transport version. The driver sits at the front of the bike with a built-in cab at the back. It is super stable on its four wheels and is narrow enough to be used in bike lanes.
The Bio-Hybrid comes with two 250W motors and provides support up to 25 km/h. The 48 V battery has a capacity of 1.2 kWh giving the Bio-Hybrid a range of 50 km. A second similar battery is optional to extend the range to 100 km. The Bio-Hybrid weights 100 kilograms and has a width of 794 mm. Though the looks of the Bio-Hybrid are great, the question is how it is to be categorized to meet European rules & regulations? Will it be subject to type approval as the total motor output exceeds 250W?
Other mobility concepts
The Bio-Hybrid was not the only new mobility concept Schaeffler presented at the CES. Their second big announcement was the unveiling of an autonomous mobility network that uses ‘robocabs’. Schaeffler says that the logistics industry will be the first sector to fully embrace autonomous vehicles. Taxi’s and people movers will be the other big area. Schaeffler’s idea is to have a fleet of small robocabs able to accommodate 4 standing or sitting adults. The fully autonomous driving cabs have a flexible chassis so that they can be transformed from a passenger version to a cargo/logistics version.
Schaeffler’s 3rdmajor announcement came with the 4ePerformance concept vehicle. This ABT Schaeffler FE01 Formula E racing car shows how modern motorsport technology can be applied to production cars. The fully-electric vehicle is powered by four Formula E motors with a total power output of 880 kW (1,200 PS).
