WASHINGTON DC, United States - Newly announced reciprocal tariffs by the Trump administration in the US has brought a renewed level of uncertainty to the bicycle industry supply chain. The proposed tariffs mean all bicycles entering the country will face some level of tariffs unless the frame itself has been manufactured in the US. The expected result is rising costs for importers on which the market relies and a stagnating retail market as US consumers face higher prices for a new bike.

As the dust settles after December 13, 2024 - of course you all know by now that's the date when the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) came into effect - numerous ambiguities remain. Flaws, gaps, and even loopholes are crying out for more clarity. At the time of writing this blog, we are still awaiting the European Commission's guidance document, which is expected to provide some of this much-needed clarity.

Decathlon expanded their market share in the otherwise weak German bicycle market in 2024 and reported a sales increase of 8% in the category bicycles. However, exact sales figures have not been disclosed.

For most international industry peers, the 2023 Taipei Cycle Show will be the first time since 2019 that they set foot on the island again. The 2020 edition was one of the first international shows to be cancelled because of the pandemic and due to strict governmental entry regulations an international event was not possible last year. 2023 marks a welcome return of one of the premium events on the bike industry calendar.

In recent years an increasing number of bicycle companies have opted for close to market production in Europe. Spurred on by the need for a consistent supply chain following issues during the pandemic, investments in European manufacturing continue to grow. AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands - Following a historic year in 2022, the bike division of Pon Holdings has reported a 5% drop in 2023. Referring to the 'sharp correction' in the bicycle market during 2023, turnover in the Pon Bike division decreased by €100 million. However despite the pressure on prices and margins, "most of our quality brands managed to hold their own thanks to their strong market positions," explains Janus Smalbraak, CEO of Pon Holdings.

HEERENVEEN, The Netherlands - Accell Group has announced today that it plans to adjust its production structure to "simplify operations and enhance efficiency". To do this Accell will merge its two facilities in Heerenveen, The Netherlands and relocate some of the current production to Accell's other European manufacturing facilities. Up to 150 job losses are expected.

MONTREAL, Canada - As part of the company's international business growth strategy, Argon 18 has appointed Patrick Flaherty as chief revenue officer (CRO). Flaherty has over twenty years' experience in the cycling industry, most recently at Specialized.

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands - E-bikes continue to be the driving force for the Dutch market. The total e-bike market volume ended at 409,467 units, representing a market share of 47.7%. The total number of bicycles and e-bikes combined ended at 858,126, down from 919,101 in 2023. This year, the national industry association RAI Vereniging included fatbike sales for the first time in their annual report which has resulted in a major shift in the statistics.

AGUEDA, Portugal - Taiwan's Fritz Jou Manufacturing is opening a bicycle factory at Bike Valley Portugal. The company announced this at the Taipei Cycle Show last week. It's a major step forward in the 'bringing production back to Europe' initiatives and the reshoring project of the European bicycle industry.

A new chapter in the reshoring of bicycle and e-bike parts production from Asia to Europe in order to increase supply chain flexibility has been announced
