    €19.8 million deal sees Deporvillage shift hands to JD Sports holding company

    ALICANTE, Spain - Iberian Sports Retail Group, has acquired an additional 18% holding in Spanish online retailer Deporvillage. This latest transaction means that the JD Sports's holding company now owns 98% of the retailer.     LeMonde paints grim picture of bicycle industry in Taiwan

    TAICHUNG, Taiwan - Any frequent visitor of bicycle industry factories in Taiwan, has seen that a lot of the workers come from countries like Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand or Indonesia. Often the signing in the factories is multi-lingual to facilitate the foreign workers. In a recent publication, LeMonde Diplomatique reports that they have found indicators of forced labour according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), particularly in the Taiwan bicycle industry.

    Shimano sales decrease 5.2%, but European revenue rebounds

    OSAKA, Japan - The 2024 financial report of Shimano Inc. indicates a rebound in sales in the second half of last year. However, in more detail the results look less promising for the international bicycle industry. The revenue in Europe and Taiwan was still down by double digits and the main growth market was China where revenue increased by almost 60%. In the long-term Shimano remains positive on bicycle sales, but the bicycle component manufacturer also points to the potential impact of geopolitical developments.

    Merida reports stable performance, but also multi million loss (updated)

    CHANGHUA, Taiwan - For Merida Industry Co. Ltd., the excess inventory situation continues to have an impact on the financial performance. Yesterday the company reported a relatively steadily performance in 2024, with full-year revenue growing by 8.7% to NT$29.63 billion (€ 823 million). The company pointed out that the entire bicycle industry is still in the stage of destocking and inventory impairment. For Merida this means a net loss NT$732.66 million (€20.4 million) before tax which can be attributed to a one-time provision and did not affect cash flow, and it could still be used to offset taxes when profits are made in the future.

    Has the anti-dumping regulation become too complex in 30 years?

    BRUSSELS, the Netherlands - The bankruptcy of the e-bike company Qwic was partly attributed by the owners to an unexpected tax bill for anti-dumping duties. In the past 3 decades several extensions were added to make the trade regulation with anti-dumping and anti-circumvention rulings. The question is now raised whether the regulation has become too complex or should companies inform themselves better?
