Athens Bike Festival Successful in Difficult Market
ATHENS, Greece – The biggest bike show on the Balkans is going stronger than ever in its 5th edition. Currently the interest in cycling is so big that the organizers of the Athens Bike Festival are working on another show in Greece’s second largest city.
Due to the lack of financing from the banks and the economic crisis it has been difficult years for the Greek cycling market. On the other hand, more and more people are using their bikes for transportation or recreation. It is obvious that cycling is now days a common word for Greek people.
As a result the Athens Bike Festival, the first and only event for cycling and cyclists, is going stronger than ever in its 5th edition. The main trends for the Greek market are: cheaper city bikes, including folding bikes in the price range between 250 and 450 euro as well as the 650b, 29er MTBs and road bikes in the price category 1,200 to 2,500 euro. The show will also see the presentation of several new e-bikes, which could indicate a new trend.
Second show in Greece
Many international brands will be present at the show, but also some domestic companies who mainly deal with products like bags or bikewear – designed and produced in Athens. Ideal bikes, the biggest local brand, will again have a strong presence on the festival.
Athens Bike Festival can be regarded as one of the main activities of the Municipality of Athens for European Mobility Week, with a lot of side activities in order to make people see cycling as a potential means of transportation in the city. Because of the success of the Athens Bike Festival and the importance of the show for the Greek market, the organizers have decided to start another show in Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki.
The Thessaloniki Bike Festival is expected to be scheduled in the beginning of April 2015. “It was a difficult year for the cycling market in Greece but we are optimistic for the near future,” said Spiros Papageorgiu, the editor of Mbike magazine and event director.
Trendy, stylish, not expensive city bikes
“More and more people are using their bikes for daily transport and the market tries to adapt to the needs of the new buyers who are somehow different than before. These people are looking for trendy, stylish, not expensive city bikes. But at the same time they want MTB and road bikes in the price category 1,500 to 3,000 euro as they are using their bikes for recreational rides and racing.”
“The market needs to adapt to the trend, including the growing popularity of -bikes. As organizers of Athens Bike Festival we are trying to bring the market together. We want to make it possible for professionals to talk with the consumers as well as the shop owners in order to better understand the needs and the trends of the market. We believe that 2015 will be a much better year for cycling and we have to be prepared for that,” said Spiros Papageorgiu.
