Streamlined for success: Inside Schwalbe's realigned Tour portfolio
With clearer choices for everyday commuters, Schwalbe’s restructured Motion family simplifies tyre selection for town-centre riding and daily urban transit.

German tyre specialist Schwalbe has undertaken a comprehensive realignment of its tour and everyday cycling portfolio, restructuring its range into three clearly defined product families: Marathon, Motion, and Hybrid. By consolidating its offering, the brand aims to simplify point-of-sale guidance, streamline inventory management across the global bike trade, and set a unified structural benchmark for its overarching brand architecture.

The portfolio update represents a key milestone in a broader brand relaunch initiated in 2023. Over several decades of organic expansion, Schwalbe’s everyday and touring models grew to cover a broad spectrum of emerging market needs. However, this steady accumulation of individual product lines gradually created a complex landscape for distributors, retailers, and end consumers.

Three families, clear use cases

“The goal with this realignment is to make tyre selection faster and more intuitive, both for retailers advising customers and for riders,” says Michael Rudolph, product manager Tour/Urban at Schwalbe. “Reducing the range by roughly 30% is meant to increase clarity without sacrificing coverage of relevant use cases.”

To eliminate this friction while honouring the guiding principle of company founder Ralf Bohle – ‘the right tyre for every bike’ – Schwalbe systematically restructured its entire tour segment around specific use cases rather than broad, individual model lists. The restructured tour portfolio organises Schwalbe’s everyday and trekking range into three distinct categories, enabling dealers and consumers to quickly navigate options based on primary riding conditions.

1. Marathon

Positioned as the ultimate worry-free family, Marathon focuses on maximum reliability, heavy-duty commuting, high mileage, and top-tier puncture resistance. Key benchmark models in this family include:

  • Green Marathon: The pioneer in eco-friendly performance, manufactured with 80% recycled and renewable materials – including recycled carbon black from the company’s own tyre recycling program – alongside
natural rubber sourced via Fair Rubber e.V. criteria using the mass balance method.
  • Marathon Plus and Marathon E-Plus: Featuring Schwalbe’s patented SmartGuard ‘flat-less’ protection layer, with the E-Plus variant offering additional dual RaceGuard fabric layers and specialised ADDIX-E
    compounds for high-torque e-bikes.
  • Marathon Efficiency and Marathon Almotion: High-performance, lightweight trekking options engineered to reduce rolling resistance and maximise e-bike battery range.

2. Motion

Geared towards modern urban mobility, speedy commuting, and contemporary design aesthetics, the Motion line combines low rolling resistance, versatile tread patterns, and striking visual appeal. Key models include:

  • Motion Big Apple and Motion Super Moto-X: High-volume balloon tyres offering built-in air cushion suspension for urban streets.
  • Motion Kojak: A lightweight, slick-style option featuring scale-like tread structures, made for sporty city bikes.
  • Motion Land Cruiser: A versatile, cost-effective all-terrain favourite that balances smooth rolling on city tarmac with reliable grip for unpaved paths.
Tailored for urban streets, the Motion tyre brings versatile grip, low rolling resistance, and a sporty design to everyday city and trekking bicycles.

3. Hybrid

Designed to bridge the gap between tarmac, gravel tracks, and off-road detours, the Hybrid family caters directly to the rapidly growing crossover and e-SUV bike segments. Key models include:

  • Hybrid Johnny Watts: Engineered specifically for e-SUVs, combining off-road cornering grip with quiet, smooth rolling on hard surfaces. Its innovative radial casing technology expands the tyre’s contact patch for added comfort and traction.
  • Hybrid Al Grounder: A high-volume cross-over tyre equipped with Double Defense sidewall protection and ADDIX Green compounds, tailored for heavy payloads on both city asphalt and country trails.

Retailer input and point-of-sale clarity

Feedback from bicycle retailers and international distributors served as an important driver for this overhaul. Partners noted that the previous portfolio structure had made it time-consuming for shop staff to recommend the ideal tyre quickly. “The number of different tyres made it hard to recommend the right option quickly at the point of sale,” Michael explains. “With three families instead of a long list of SKUs, retailers can now merchandise tyres by clear use-case categories – durability with Marathon, performance and design with Motion, and all-road versatility with Hybrid.”

This streamlined hierarchy also improves digital retail interfaces, allowing online product finders to yield concise, accurate results based on broad family traits.

Our ambition is for every Schwalbe tyre to be e-bike ready, eliminating the need for separate product lines”

Universal e-bike readiness

Schwalbe’s ability to refine its catalog without narrowing market coverage stems from recent technological breakthroughs in compound development and casing architecture. Advanced multi-compound rubber formulations now cover far broader operational envelopes, eliminating the need for narrow niche models. A central pillar of this consolidation is bridging the historical divide between traditional push-bikes and motorised setups.

“One of the biggest changes is the merger of our e-bike and conventional bicycle tyre ranges,” Michael highlights. “Going forward, our ambition is for every Schwalbe tyre to be e-bike ready, eliminating the need for separate product lines. Customers no longer have to choose between dedicated bicycle and e-bike tyres, which makes the product range much easier to navigate while streamlining inventory for dealers.”

Unified brand architecture

This tour segment realignment is not an isolated initiative; it reflects a master brand architecture being rolled out across all Schwalbe disciplines – including Dropbar (road/gravel) and Mountain Bike lines – establishing a
unified, use-case-driven structure across the manufacturer’s global catalog.

Future proofing for evolving micro-mobility

The everyday and touring cycling sectors have expanded dramatically over the past five years. Today’s market encompasses everything from heavy-duty utility e-bikes carrying substantial payloads to ultra-lightweight, integrated e-bikes that visually mirror traditional bicycles. Michael concludes: “The everyday and touring market is becoming increasingly diverse, especially as e-bike technology evolves. On one end, we see powerful e-bikes with large batteries and high torque; on the other, lightweight e-bikes that are difficult to distinguish from conventional bicycles. That is exactly why we designed our new portfolio to be more flexible and future-oriented.”

By maintaining close, early-stage partnerships with bike manufacturers, Schwalbe has engineered the new three-family structure to adapt seamlessly to emerging frame geometries, load profiles, and powertrain innovations – providing a clearer, more efficient roadmap for bike dealers and riders worldwide.
