Due to drastic market changes since early 2022, Kona, like so many other bicycle brands, could not live up to the high expectations set for the future cycling market.

LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg - One individual and two companies have been found guilty of evading customs duties on the importation of e-bikes from China. The case was investigated and prosecuted by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Brussels last week. In total, the three defendants were found guilty of evading €3.1 million in customs duties and were sentenced to a fine of over €15.5 million each.

OSAKA, Japan - Bicycle component manufacturer Shimano reports that demand for bicycles continued to be weak at the start of the year. In the first quarter of 2024, net sales decreased by double digits compared to last year. Also for the rest of the year the outlook will remain uncertain for Shimano.

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Robotics specialist Da Shiang Automation (DSA) premiered a frictionless hub motor at this year's Taipei Cycle show. Entering the market under the brand name DTboost, the FMS01 hub motor features the DNGate Clutch System which allows the user to ride without resistance from the motor and gearbox when exceeding 25 km/h.

PARK City, Utah - Kona Bicycles was a noticeable last-minute absence at this week's Sea Otter event in California. The brand pulled down their booth on Wednesday and left the site raising concerns about the financial stability of the company. On Thursday, brand owner Kent Outdoors announced the appointment of a new CFO.

BERGAMO, Italy - Trek has closed its Italian subsidiary and incorporated this market within the newly formed Trek South Europe. In a short press release, the American company announced the creation of its fifth major European subsidiary, following GAS (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), BLX (the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg), Nordics and UK+.

EMSTEK, Germany - Bicycle brand Hercules has built on a firm base on its home market Germany as well as some export, including a new head office and show room in the north of Germany. Export manager Michael Honkomp and sales manager Joep Stumpe want to take the brand into Europe and discussed their ambitions with Bike Europe.

SCHARMEDE, Germany - Known for pioneering the birth of the action sports movement in the early 80s, Haro Bikes is embarking on a new journey forward in Europe. "We are currently building our new European sales network," explains Verena Begemann, general manager of Haro Bikes Europe GmbH.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Nordic Bike Shows has announced the premiere of the Stockholm Bike Show, set to take place in the Swedish capital on 29-30 March, 2025. "We aim to bring together cycling enthusiasts, industry professionals, and innovators, showcasing the latest trends, technologies, and to experience in the world of cycling," says organiser Christian Ritter.

A look at the bicycle industry reveals various approaches to dealing with an economic downturn. Leading the way is one such strategy, as demonstrated by Tektro and TRP. For 2024, the bicycle component specialist has planned a series of product launches. The first unveiling will already take place at the Garda Bike Festival in May.
