UK losing heavily in catch-up game with European bicycle market

LONDON, United Kingdom - In contrast to other European markets, where declines in unit sales could be offset against higher sales values, this can't be said for the UK market. The post-COVID downturn in the UK cycling market has seen the total market value fall a further 6% in 2023, following an 18% decline in 2022. On top of that, in 2023 the UK had "the worst mechanical bike sales this century," the latest data confirms.

UK bike sales drop to ‘lowest level in 20 years’

LONDON, England – Sales data collected from UK e-bike and bicycle retailers show that the market has taken a huge drop in 2022. With e-bike sales plateauing and regular bike sales dropping 22%, the country’s Bicycle Association is calling for action as the market hits a 20-year low.

LONDON, UK - The total number of bicycles sold in the UK in 2020 reached an estimated 3.3 million units, data from market intelligence agency Mintel has revealed. This is a 22% rise on the 2019 sales. Although e-bikes are yet to play a key role in volume to the same degree as in other European markets, they have pushed the market value over the billion-pound barrier.

E-bikes and infrastructure propel the UK industry forward in 2020

LONDON, UK - According to the latest statistics published by the UK government, 2020 has shown huge growth in the value of e-bikes imported into the UK. For the first time, the value of e-bikes imported from other EU countries overtook those from outside the EU. In the first nine months of 2020, the total value of e-bike imports already stood at around €109.56 million. This is a 31% hike in value compared to €89.78 million for the full 12 months in 2019.

LONDON, UK - The vast majority of UK cycle sales are imports from the Far East and there is a booming but relatively tiny e-bike market numbering in the tens of thousands of units. Cycling UK suggests, based on 'informal industry estimate', that 30% of cycles sold are childrens', 30% MTBs, 10% road, 26% classic/hybrid, and 4% folding/other. They also suggest about half of the retail value of the cycle market comes from bicycle sales, and half from parts and accessories.
