HANNOVER, Germany - At the April industrial engineering trade show Hannover Messe 2025, Giant Group and Siemens announced their collaboration to produce a new generation of performance e-bikes and road bikes.

TAIPEI, Taiwan - For the first 4 months of the year, Taiwanese customs data showed that the country's bicycle industry was showing the first signs of recovery after years of global market stagnation. Both e-bike and component exports rose in the first quarter of 2025, driven by increasing demand for high-value products and improved average unit prices. However, preliminary export data for May shows that this growth has not been sustained.

TAIPEI, Taiwan - The fact that the Taiwanese supply chain has struggled during 2024 is fully evident in the latest custom statistics. In Q3, the island nation exported around 75,000 e-bike units, a 44% drop compared to 2023. E-bike exports to the EU specifically dropped 55% to a mere 34,000 units between July and September. Most significantly, the country is on course to see its export value drop half a billion euros this year in total.

MADRID, Spain - Bicycle production in Spain rebounded again in October with 25,400 bicycles produced for a value of €18.2 million. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this is a growth of 23.3% in units and 16.7% in turnover, according to data published by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism.

MILAN, Italy - Dutch bicycle manufacturer Accell Group painted a rosy picture in October when it announced it had improved its financial position and reduced its corporate debt in agreement with its financial stakeholders. But seeing as this financial restructuring is not due for completion until February 2025, credit ratings agency Moody's has downgraded Accell Group, citing "a very high likelihood of a default occurring over the next 6 months."

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands - The Public Prosecution Service in the Netherlands has decided to discontinue its criminal investigation into cargobike manufacturer Babboe B.V. The company was suspected of producing and marketing certain types of (electric) cargo bikes that allegedly had safety issues.

ZEIST, The Netherlands - Between April and June this year, the number of e-bikes imported into the EU rose to 223,000 units almost matching the same period last year. Significantly, this figure is almost double the amount imported in the first quarter of the year. All top 3 importing countries, Taiwan, Vietnam and China significantly increased the number of units entering the EU during this time period. However, at what cost?

OSAKA, Japan - High inventories in key markets continue to have a knock-on effect for Shimano, the company has reported today in its first half year figures. As a result, net sales in the company's bicycle segment decreased 20.7% in the first 6 months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. However sales in the key market of Europe reveal a turnaround.

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Mobile Power System (MPS), an Acer Group subsidiary, is a lithium-ion battery pack designer and e-bike propulsion system solution provider. At Taipei Cycle show this year the company displayed its new 90 Nm mid-motor for cargobikes and MTB categories.

BERLIN, Germany - European shared e-bike and e-scooter providers Tier and Dott have preliminarily agreed to merge. With a fresh investment of €60 million, the joint entity will continue to operate under the TIER and Dott brands combining "the expertise from both operating models and incorporating the advanced technology from each service."

HELSINKI, Finland - Vapaus Bikes Finland Oy, a bike leasing service which combines e-mobility, digital solutions, and welfare development in its service model has been recognised as one of the most pioneering startups in the mobility sector across Europe. With a turnover of €18.8 the company is now eyeing market growth across Europe.

LONDON, England - Laka, an insurtech providing a range of insurance and circular economy services to e-bike riders, cyclists and companies has announced a €7.6 million funding round as it "doubles down on growth" with the rise of e-bike sales in Europe. Additionally, the Porsche-backed company has acquired French e-bike broker Cylanto to expand its presence in France.

ZEIST, the Netherlands - "Half of young consumers find it acceptable to buy fakes," is the outcome of a new study by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). While Europeans are growing wary of counterfeits and illegal content, price remains a deciding factor as young consumers are more likely to find it acceptable to buy fakes. Could this also have implications for e-bike brands, particularly in the high-end segment?

FULDATAL, Germany - The founder of Rohloff GmbH and developer of the 'Rohloff S-L-T 99' derailleur bicycle chain and the Speedhub 14-speed IHG, Bernhard Rohloff, has died aged 73. It was thanks to his technical innovations that gearbox equipped bicycles were able to establish themselves in the field of sporting use.

KOBLENZ, Germany - To develop a more sustainable titanium supply chain through the production of bicycle components, Canyon Bicycles is collaborating with a US-based developer of 100% recycled and low carbon titanium. IperionX has agreed upon an initial project to prototype Canyon bicycle parts, including for bicycle frames, via additive manufacturing methods.

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands - Cargoroo has raised a sum of ten million euros from investors to support the growth of its shared e-cargobike concept. Having established a presence in multiple Dutch cities as well as 2 cities in Belgium and Berlin, the new investment will be used to support launches in more European cities across Germany and a market entrance in France.

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Urban e-bike brand Cowboy has achieved B Corp status, one of the first e-bike brands to do so. The brand controls the sustainability of its supply chain, packaging and the recycling of its bike components. To coincide with B Corp, Cowboy has also relaunched its Circular scheme where e-bikes are refurbished by in-house mechanics and given a second life.
