ÁGUEDA, Portugal - EU-funded close-to-market bicycle production in Portugal is continuing to gain momentum. According to the national bicycle industry association ABIMOTA, the sales value in the first two months of this year increased year-on-year by almost 50% to nearly €110 million.

PRZASNYSZ, Poland - As many as 86% of respondents in a recent survey have noticed the growing popularity of e-bikes on the streets in Poland and 84% admit that e-bikes can be a convenient way to get around the countryside. Commissioned by the Polish bike manufacturer Kross, the survey shows that sales of e-bikes have huge potential for growth like in other European markets.

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Packaging volumes continue to rise globally. No official figures for the bicycle industry are available, but looking at long supply chain legs, the contribution to the tonnes of plastic and carboard waste can be regarded as very substantial. The European industry organisations are launching an industry-wide commitment to reduce packaging.

REDDITCH, UK - The UK's self-proclaimed largest bricks and mortar cycle retailer, Halfords, has released preliminary results for the 52 weeks to 2nd April 2021. The figures show the bike boom in the UK has yet to show signs of relenting with e-mobility sales up 94% and mechanical bikes 113%. Greater online and service sales are starting to replace traditional cycling product sales, is a further conclusion of the company.

LONDON, UK - Recent announcements from the UK's Halfords and the trade organisation, Bicycle Association of Great Britain (BAGB), both suggest that, despite the continuing sales surge, supply chain difficulties are cramping the growth of the market there.

BUDAPEST, Hungary - The e-bike and bicycle industry in Hungary is facing serious shortage of parts and components due to supply chain problems. This topic was addressed by Róbert Sipiczki, founder and managing director at the Hungarian manufacturer Bikefun Ltd. and secretary general of the Hungarian Cycling and Trade Association (MKKSZ) in the Hungarian media.

LYON, France - Retail chain Cyclable is solidifying its place as one the most important e-bike sellers in the trekking, travel, city and e-cargo bike categories in France. In 2020, the chain which operates around 60 stores domestically, registered a turnover of €53 million against €40 million in 2019. The chain sold 50% more e-bikes compared to 2019 and has big plans for the future.

WALS, Austria - Austrian sporting goods chain store giant Hervis Sport has announced a spring offensive, following the opening of a new flagship store in Innsbruck, Austria. This offensive relies not only on a chain store expansion in Austria, but in six further European countries in which they are already on the ground. The focus of this heralded spring offensive is on nothing but "bicycles, outdoor and even more stores."

REUTLINGEN, Germany - In an open publication, Bosch ebike Systems CEO Claus Fleischer, calls for a major change of the transport policy on the company's home market Germany. "We are lagging behind when looking at neighboring countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark. They can enjoy the freedom and flexibility of a bicycle or e-bike, but changes in German society are stuck on bumpy bike paths."
