    Portuguese industry reports hiking export levels

    AGUEDA, Portugal - The joint booth of the Portuguese bicycle industry at Eurobike last week reflected the positive vibe of the country's industry. A prototype on display was entirely built with high-end components, which except for the tyres were all 'made in Portugal'. At the same time, ABIMOTA, announced a record export level for May.

    No delayed Covid-effect as Japanese bicycle market dips

    TOKYO, Japan - Neither the corona crisis or a shift in mentality to sustainable transport options have been able to lead to a strengthening of either the Japanese bicycle industry or the domestic bicycle market. A first look at 2021 bicycle figures compiled by the Japan Bicycle Promotion Institute (JBPI) show the same trend as previous years, that the market is weakening.

    FOSHAN, China - The home appliance giant Midea Group took over the e-bike drive system manufacturer Motinova. Midea Group, a well-known Fortune 500 company founded in 1968. Recently Midea announced a 11 billion yuan (€1.56 billion) investment schema to establish a new business for the production of parts for new energy vehicles. The take-over of Motinova is part of that strategy.

    Stagnant supply chains put brakes on Swiss bicycle business

    AARAU, Switzerland - After total bicycle sales skyrocketed by 38% in 2020, poor availability brought the Swiss industry back down to earth in 2021. Sales fell by 1.6% to a total of 493,826 e-bikes and bicycles. E-bike sales have now grown to a 37.9% market share.
