For a long time the bicycle industry has been able to rely on the fact that cycling itself is considered sustainable, but that is changing. Manufacturers across the industry are now examining their own practices and making changes to the production process. Big steps are currently being taken to ensure the industry is set up for a sustainable future.

MADRID, Spain - In line with all market expectations, the production volume of the bicycle industry in Spain decreased by 34.7% last September compared with 2022. This major decline can be regarded as a correction on the COVID related boom. Production and sales volumes are still above 2019 levels.

MADRID, Spain - Bicycle exports from Spain to the rest of the world remain well above pre-pandemic figures and show a positive trade balance, according to provisional data from the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. Although production figures in the country are dipping compared to last year, bicycle production in Spain also remains above the levels achieved in 2019.

HEERENVEEN, the Netherlands - The financial situation for KKR owned Accell Group is becoming increasingly challenging. A group of lenders decided to select advisers to assess options for the bicycle manufacturer amid struggles spurred by waning demand and operational hurdles. Accell is also facing an expensive recall of the Babboe cargobike and at the same time the union might shut down one of the Heerenveen factories later today.

WELS, Austria - In the first six months of 2023, Pierer Mobility AG achieved a new record revenue of €1.39 million, up 20.2%, compared to 2022. However, "the bicycle market as a whole is characterised by major changes. The consolidation that has already begun and is expected, will have profound effects on the entire bicycle industry," the motorcycle and e-bike specialist warns.

MILAN, Italy - The Competition and Market Authority (AGCM) in Italy has started an investigation against Robert Bosch GmbH to verify the claim of abuse of their dominant position on the European market for e-bike drive systems.

VILNIUS, Lithuania - The announcement by Pon Holding to construct a new e-bike and bicycle factory in Lithuania started a string of reactions in this small Eastern European country. With this new dynamic, the country has put itself on the map as the next bicycle production hub in Europe.

ŠIAULIAI, Lithuania - Overcapacity and a slowdown in demand in Europe were the main reasons for a decline in turnover in 2023 reports bicycle manufacturer UAB Baltik Vairas. In 2023 the company generated a turnover of € 170.96 million, down 7.5% from € 184.9 million in 2022.

ST INGBERT, Germany - One of the most modern bicycle factories in Europe: that's the claim Kettler Alu-Rad attaches to its new home in western Germany. Bike Europe visited the €100 million facility to follow the production and assembly process.

FRANKFURT, Germany - Porsche AG bundled its e-bike drivetrain activities under the umbrella of Porsche eBike Performance GmbH, which it founded in 2022. This includes the recently acquired brands Greyp and Fazua. The latter is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, which is why the Eurobike presentation in Frankfurt was all about the lightweight e-MTB pioneer. However, the e-bike ambitions of the German company go beyond this. What can we expect from Porsche in the coming years?

ZEIST, The Netherlands - Dutch fatbike manufacturers are experiencing a drastic decline in demand following the uproar surrounding e-bikes with fat tyres in the country. Phatfour's sales in its home market are currently about 75% lower than last year. Local competitor, Urban Mobility, the company behind Doppio, recently filed for bankruptcy. Can export markets offer a saviour for Dutch fatbike bands?

BRUSSELS, Belgium - That 2024 was a challenging year for European e-bike markets is no secret. How bad though, is now revealed in the latest EU e-bike import statistics published by Eurostat. "We are in ongoing talks with investors and we have strong hopes that these negotiations will end successfully.
