Belgian speed pedelec market accelerates as leasing reshapes demand

Belgium's speed pedelec market continued its transformation in the first half of 2026, with strong growth in new registrations driven by leasing contracts and large fleet deliveries, while the rapidly expanding second-hand market is creating a broader customer base for speed pedelec sales in Europe's leading market.

Belgium pulling ahead of neighbouring markets with steady growth

Contrary to almost all other European countries, the Belgian bicycle market is performing very well. After the 2022 peak, the market bounced back to a pre-pandemic level, and has not been affected by the sustained decline seen in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. In 2025, the Belgian market even experienced a 7.1% increase to 578,737 units in total. What made this Belgian miracle?

Velofollies thrives as Belgian market pivots into a plus

Belgium in January was the place to be this winter, and not just for the Benelux bicycle industry, but for the global market. Velofollies , beyond capitalising on the Eurobike implosion, is centred in a growing, mature market for both performance and mobility cycling. Although market data will not start trickling in across Europe for a couple of months, figures presented during Velofollies show that Belgium is starting the year on the back of a 7.7% increase in sales volume in 2025. With sales back in the plus and renewed optimism in the local market, it was almost impossible for Velofollies not to deliver this year.

Subscribers only Belgium now biggest growth market for e-bikes

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The Belgium bicycle market recovered remarkably from the sales dip in 2021 caused by supply chain constraints. The total market volume increased by 19% from 584,913 units in 2021 to 685,871 bicycles and e-bikes last year. Like in many other EU markets, also in Belgium it was the e-bike that took up the majority of the sales growth.

Subscribers only Supply issues cause growth in Belgian e-bike market to falter

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The total sales in the Belgian bike market fell by 1.2% in 2021, turning the tide on the 4% growth seen in 2020. A drop in e-bike sales and the sportive segment, which were both hampered by limited availability due to the supply chain problems, contributed to the overall decrease.
