    Pon declares 'robust' 2023 performance despite bike market correction

    AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands - Following a historic year in 2022, the bike division of Pon Holdings has reported a 5% drop in 2023. Referring to the 'sharp correction' in the bicycle market during 2023, turnover in the Pon Bike division decreased by €100 million. However despite the pressure on prices and margins, "most of our quality brands managed to hold their own thanks to their strong market positions," explains Janus Smalbraak, CEO of Pon Holdings.

    Vefaa e-bike brand adopts eBikeLabs' operating system

    GRENOBLE, France - French companies eBikeLabs and Vefaa have announced the creation of an e-bike equipped with eBikeOS technology, one of the first operating systems dedicated to e-bikes. Known as Bonjour Techno, the first prototypes of the e-bikes have been available since March. All units are assembled in Villeurbanne, at the 'Usine à vélo', an assembly factory for other French brands such as AddBike, Cyclik, Vepli and many others.

    Bicycle industry kicks-off 'Sustainable Supply Chain Project'

    BRUSSELS, Belgium - The international bicycle industry has embraced the initiative of the Taiwan Bicycle Association to agree upon a set of 10 sustainable supply chain principles. Three of these, education, energy and eco-design, were prioritised by the World Bicycle Industry Association (WBIA) at the 2024 Taipei Cycle Show.

    enviolo appoints new CEO as David Hancock steps down

    AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands - E-bike component manufacturer, enviolo has appointed a new CEO. Ed Cully has succeeded inaugural CEO David Hancock and assumed his new responsibilities as of April 8th. Hancock will transition to a non-executive role, joining enviolo's board of directors.

    Babboe offers replacement for 22,000 cargobikes after inspection

    AMERSFOORT, the Netherlands - Accell Group subsidiary Babboe has issued a recall and replacement program for in total 22,000 cargo bikes. The first batches will be collected in the Netherlands and Germany in mid-April, after which the recall campaign will be rolled out in the other countries. All owners of these models will be offered a new bicycle or cargo bike.

    Signing of European Declaration on Cycling marks historic milestone

    BRUSSELS, Belgium - The interinstitutional European Declaration on Cycling was signed on Wednesday 3 April at the Informal Council meeting of Transport Ministers led by the Belgian EU presidency at Egmont Palace in Brussels. The European Declaration on Cycling is the most ambitious EU-level policy initiative on cycling to date, recognising cycling as a strategic priority and acknowledging its power to generate enormous benefits for Europe.

    myStromer and Revolt Zycling settle Swiss speed pedelec dispute

    OBERWANGEN, Switzerland - The confiscation of all e-bikes at the Opium brand stand caused a big noise at Eurobike last year. The reason was the patent lawsuit brought by myStromer AG against the Opium brand owner Revolt Zycling AG. The Federal Patent Court recently ruled in favour of Stromer. However, the defendant did not wait for this decision, but has already brought a modified design onto the market.

    Shimano targets entry-level cyclists with new component system

    OSAKA, Japan - Shimano has launched a new affordable component system, Shimano Essa, which will be compatible with the bicycle component maker's current 8-speed flat-bar Acera, Altus and Tourney TX systems. Also, the Cues range launched last year, has been optimised to include Short Reach, an ergonomic design for riders with small hands.

    AARAU, Switzerland - This Swiss bicycle market developed in 2023 in line with other European countries. After the sales peak in 2020-2022, the market volume dropped last year by 18%. While sales decreases were reported in all categories, it was the speed pedelec market that made strong gains.
