    Spontaneous fire hazard causes worldwide recall of Santa Cruz e-bike model

    SANTA CRUZ, California - A global recall has been issued for the Santa Cruz Heckler 9 bike model after multiple battery fires were reported. The Santa Cruz-based company, a subset of the Dutch transport conglomerate Pon Holdings, first issued the recall in May, warning customers that the e-bike's lithium-ion battery can overheat and pose a fire hazard.

    E-bike insurer Laka secures another multi-million investment

    LONDON, UK - British mobility insurance firm Laka has secured $10.4 million (€8.9 million) in a Series B funding round, it announced this week. The move strengthens the company's goal to lead the green mobility insurance market for e-bikes, e-scooters and sustainable transport across nine European Union markets and the United Kingdom. The round was co-led by Shift4Good and MS&AD Ventures, with participation from existing backers including Ponooc and Porsche Ventures.

    Shimano reports 15.6% bicycle component sales growth in Q1

    SAKAI CITY, Japan - Component manufacturer Shimano points to "signs of recovery starting to appear in sales of completed bicycle sales" as it releases its first quarter consolidated financial results for 2025.     EU e-bike imports drop 28% in first 9 months of 2024

    ZEIST, The Netherlands - Imports of e-bikes into the EU reached almost 200,000 units in Q3 of 2024, almost matching the same volume of Q3 in 2023. Although there were signs of market recovery with an increase in e-bikes entering EU shores in Q2, the overall year-on-year decrease in the first nine months of 2024 is 28% compared to 2023. Perhaps more important, this is not counteracted by a higher import value.

    NUNSPEET, The Netherlands - Once claiming to be market leader in the Netherlands, e-bike brand Stella is on the verge of bankruptcy. Despite repeated financial injections from its owner DMEP, the manufacturer has now filed for a payment extension.     LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg - A freezing order has been executed against an Italian company suspected of a major customs fraud involving the importation of e-bikes from China, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has announced. The company has been accused of evading more than €9.8 million in customs duties. This latest case raises questions about how complex it is to import e-bike components into the EU.

    Halfords reports 30% dip in bike sales in UK despite heavy discounting

    REDDITCH, England - Citing headwinds in the bicycle market, UK retail chain, Halfords, has closed the financial year with a 30% drop in volume in its cycling division. "The bicycle market consolidated at a faster rate than expected, leading to much more discounting, which put significant short-term pressure on gross margin," the company reports.

    EU Commission extends 'right to repair' regulation to include bicycles

    BRUSSELS, Belgium - Members of European parliament (MEPS) have adopted measures to stimulate consumers to repair products instead of buying new ones. First presented by the EU Commission in March 2023, the scope of the 'right to repair' proposal has also been extended to include bicycles. It aims to ensure favourable conditions for an independent repair market and prevent manufacturers from hindering repairs.
