'Europe must recruit 105,000 bike mechanics by 2032'

Europe's cycling sector will need to recruit 105,000 more bicycle mechanics by 2032, equivalent to 60% of today's workforce of around 175,000. That is the central finding of the NextGen Mechanics report, which links the shortage to low pay, fragmented training and the rise of e-bikes and leasing fleets.

European bicycle market stabilises while local component production loses ground

The European bicycle industry has continued its transition towards a more balanced and demand-driven market. Following the exceptional surge in demand during the Covid boom, supply chain disruptions, and the subsequent market correction, the latest 2025 data clearly indicate that the industry is stabilising. "This is a sign that the inventory troubles that we have had coming out of COVID are now finally at the end," said industry body ECI CEO Paul Walsh at the presentation of the 2026 Bicycle Industry & Market Profile (BIMP).

ECI whitepaper: Cooperation needed in battle against non-compliant e-bikes

Industry association, European Cycling Industries (ECI), has set out a comprehensive framework for tackling the growing challenge of non-compliant e-bikes in Europe. In a new white paper, it distinguishes between different forms of non-compliance, including technical breaches of the EPAC standard, customs and trade fraud, and downstream tampering. These issues require targeted enforcement rather than blanket restrictions on compliant e-bikes, the industry organisation argues.
