With this new system, the company wants to redefine the limits of technology and performance. The items in the lineup can all be combined: “The flexibility allows e-bike manufacturers to use a single frame design with a range of PW-Link combinations. This way, we are enabling greater customisation and variety for end consumers,” explains Fabio Marzola, division manager e-bike drive units & systems at Yamaha Motor Europe.
Each component within the PW-Link system is developed and manufactured in the company's advanced facilities in Japan and France. The new system marks a significant evolution in the product lineup. “We have over 30 years of expertise in e-bike systems engineering and production, and now we have created one of the most sophisticated and dependable e-bike systems on the market. This system is designed to deliver a premium riding experience,” Marzola adds.

Collaboration with e-bike partners
Yamaha is strengthening its collaboration with e-bike partners through the launch of an advanced CAN-OPEN EDS platform. Marzola explains: “The PW-Link system serves as a dynamic bridge between us and our network of partners, empowering OEM brands to play an active role in the co-development of future e-bike models. This deeper integration fosters more meaningful partnerships and unlocks new levels of functionality and innovation.”
“By working as a fully integrated partner with each OEM, we are uniquely positioned to deliver customised solutions that can reshape the product development process. This way, we are streamlining workflows, increasing efficiency, and significantly reducing the time from prototype to production,” Marzola adds.
Marzola then outlines the products that make up the new system’s lineup.
Drive units optimised for different e-bikes
To start with, there are three main drive units optimised for various e-bike styles. Marzola explains: “The PW-X4 is a lightweight, compact model of 2.6kg. It offers 100Nm of torque and a 48V output, making it the most powerful unit. Then we have the PW-S3, a versatile option for everyday, fast, and cargo riding, with a torque ranging from 60Nm to 85Nm. And the last one is the PW-L1. This ultra-light model weighs just 2kg and is ideal for climbing and mountain riding with 60Nm torque."
All units include Zero Cadence technology and are fully compatible with all PW-Link batteries and displays. They produce a low noise, have a compact design, and offer easy third-party integration.
High-performance batteries

Marzola notes that the system includes two high-performance 48V batteries designed for safety, efficiency, and flexibility. The first one is the integrated battery 840 with 48V and 842Wh, and a weight of 4.2kg. This battery has anti-theft features, and top-tier energy density and safety.
The second option is the integrated battery 560 with 48V, 560Wh and a weight of 3.2kg. This version is ideal for short trips and has dual-battery support and robust fire prevention systems.
Compact and sleek displays

For the display, the brand also offers a choice. One option is the side display. This is a compact TFT LCD with ergonomic controls and a customisable interface. The second option is the integrated display. This is a sleek, top-tube embedded design with ANT+ compatibility and essential ride data visibility.
Yamaha PW-Link app
In addition to new products, Yamaha introduces an app. “We also have a next-gen app offering Bluetooth connectivity to all components, real-time performance data, anti-theft features, and maintenance notifications,” explains Marzola. “This app is customizable for OEM partners and enhances the rider's control and experience.”
Yamaha e-bike systems service platform
“We also recently launched an e-bike systems service platform in France,” concludes Marzola. “This dealer platform provides training, spare parts ordering, warranty handling, and technical support. It is our aim to expand this platform across Europe to support the PW-Link system and further strengthen the relationship between dealers and customers.”
