How Chogori powers the next generation of e-bikes with connection solutions

With offices in Asia, North America and Europe, Chogori has been expanding its international presence to support existing and prospective clients. As e-bike design and functionality evolve, the company is strategically positioned to support OEMs and system providers with both high quality, standardised cable assemblies and fully customised connection solutions for the next generation of e-bikes.

Chogori has developed a reputation as a reliable partner for global and local brands across mid-range to premium e-bike segments. The company always strives for innovation. It supported for example the development and production process of the Specialized Turbo Levo 4 high-performance eMTB. This bike required a customised cable assembly and connectors to suit the frame design and electrical interfaces. Chogori delivered a solution with seamless integration, that performs under the most demanding conditions.

Standardised cable assembly solutions

“Bicycle brands who make city e-bikes and functional e-bikes, such as cargo bikes, commonly turn to our standardised cable assembly solutions,” explains Raina Zhou, product manager for Chogori’s e-bike division. “These assemblies are fully certified and available in common standards, to ensure full compatibility and meet compliance requirements. Their appeal lies in being readily available, reliable and easy to integrate.”

The cost-factor is naturally an important criterion and Chogori’s standardised cable assemblies meet the needs of many e-bike applications. This enables brands to remain cost-efficient while producing reliable, easy-to-service bikes for their customers.

Zhou adds: “Standardised cable assemblies provide a huge advantage for young brands, as they can rely on our trusted solutions. And at the same time, they have the flexibility to choose the motor, battery, charger, controllers and accessories that best meet their needs.”

Alongside supplying bike brands directly, Chogori also partners with leading drive system manufacturers such as Maxon, TQ, Mahle, and DJI.

Innovation in eMTB and eRoad connectability

eMTB and eRoad bikes are fast-growing segments for customised connectors and cable assemblies. These sport-oriented designs are often limited by tight spaces. This means they require special attention to enable seamless drive system integration while preserving performance and functionality.

Zhou notes: “The trend in bike design is toward better-integrated, often nearly invisible, e-drive systems. We are supporting our customers with customized solutions. This typically means that we need to reduce the size, adapt the design and combine connectors.”

The latest generation of eRoad bikes is more streamlined and lighter than ever. These bikes give a discerning audience of sports cyclists access to road cycling, without the stigma and weight of a highly visible and bulky electric drive. However, this also requires that the motor, batteries, controller and cable assembly are designed for seamless integration.

eMTBs are subjected to more vibration and movement in comparison to regular city e-bikes. Extreme riding conditions also increase the demand for waterproofing and dustproofing. For these use-cases, the cable assemblies are designed to be secure and durable.

“Reliability and waterproof protection are key attributes of our solutions,” adds Zhou. “OEMs and system providers recognise the quality of our solutions and approach us to meet the high standards they aim for in their e-bikes.”

With our new Munich office, European-based bike brands will benefit from faster access to experts”

Next-generation custom cable assemblies

As the development of e-bike drive systems continues, Chogori works in cooperation with brands to develop new standardised cable assemblies that later become available across the market. One example of the company's customisation capabilities involves modifying the flange on a cable connector to meet functional or aesthetic requirements, without changing the electrical interface.

The company supports clients throughout the design, development, and production stages. For the latest generation of eRoad bikes, the drive systems are extremely compact and space for the motor, battery and cable routing is limited. So creative engineering and design solutions for cable assemblies have become essential.

Global growth strategy

“As part of our global growth strategy, Munich in Germany is home to our newest office,” concludes Zhou. “European-based bike brands and brands in e-bike drive systems will benefit from more convenient and faster access to experts.”
