Bafang, well-known for its complete e-bike drive systems, has pledged a commitment to battery safety and compliance following the introduction of the new EN 50604-1 standard; a mandatory threshold for e-bike lithium batteries entering the EU market.
“As e-bikes evolve, so too do their battery packs in terms of shape, capacity, charge and discharge ports, communication protocols, and installation methods. But it isn’t always easy for these things to be produced against the EU Regulation 2023/1542 and the EN 50604-1 standards,” Gary Xu, head of research and development explains. “At Bafang, following regulations is a given, but we’re also committed to going that extra mile to instill confidence and consumer trust in our global partnerships.”
Vigorous testing transparency
Bafang's 5000 square meters testing centre, accredited by CNAS, features specialised labs for testing environmental reliability, mechanical performance, safety compliance, and real-world validation, effectively shortening battery certification cycles.
The company has already established a comprehensive certification matrix covering its core drive systems including the H730, M510RS, and M430, which debuted at this year’s Eurobike trade fair. Its products have endured over a hundred rigorous tests, including mechanical shock, crush, drop, vibration, salt spray immersion, extreme temperature cycling, and overcharge/discharge.
In addition, Bafang executes comprehensive quality control, including full-system matching verification to ensure seamless component integration. The company also performs 100% advanced charge-discharge testing to verify efficiency, cycle life, thermal management, and voltage stability against international standards.

Commitment to sustainability
Bafang steadfastly upholds its commitment to sustainable quality, delivering stable, safe, and durable lithium batteries. This is evident from the fact that Bafang has over 50 battery products already certified. And the company is also one of the first manufacturers to secure dual certification for several battery models.
With the new EU Regulation 2023/1542, which covers a range of battery categories, sustainability throughout the product’s lifecycle is a key component.
“A core element of this battery regulation is the recycling of raw materials for battery cells. Bafang’s core cell suppliers are all Tier 1 global brands and they have consistently adhered to the EU’s circular economy goals,” Gary states.
Competitive edge
In terms of the core technology, Bafang employs automotive-grade Battery Management Systems (BMS). Combined with millisecond-level communication capabilities and sufficient cell activating technology, this fully optimises cell performance, significantly enhancing the battery’s life cycle and stability.
The company has also revised its DFM manual to prioritise sustainable criteria such as using recyclable materials, simplifying structures and minimising the environmental impact of aftersales repairability right from the design stage.
Despite market changes, supply chain compliance and sustainability are becoming increasingly important for brands to maintain a competitive edge. Bafang is already collaborating with leading institutions like SGS, TÜV, DEKRA, and UL. Additionally, the company is advancing internal initiatives, including BMS intelligence upgrades, the development of battery passport systems, and the construction of carbon footprint calculation models. Through these efforts, it aims to provide customers with safer, more durable, and environmentally friendly e-bike drive systems.

A win-win for all
Bafang maintains long-term partnerships with top-tier international cell suppliers, ensuring a mature supply chain consistently delivers high-quality raw materials. The solid integration of automated processing equipment and digital manufacturing systems enables high-precision and standardised quality control.
While meeting stringent EU standards like EN 50604-1 and Regulation 2023/1542, the company demonstrates a fundamental commitment to European safety expectations and consumer trust. The true focus lies in how these batteries achieve superior performance through advanced design, rigorous testing, precise manufacturing, and sustainable practices.
The journey ahead
Bafang’s battery technology is defined by the company’s relentless focus on safety and durability. It delivers reliable, long-lasting, and environmentally conscious e-bike drive solutions, with the aim to empower global partners and riders on their journey ahead.
“We actually believe that this regulation will safeguard the healthy development of the e-bike industry as a whole by significantly raising the requirements for battery design, manufacturing, and service,” Gary concludes.
