Folding bikes are no longer a niche. The past decade has brought a wave of options at every price tier, from entry-level commuters to premium folders making a fashion statement. "The growth of the folding bike category has come with higher expectations, and riding performance has been at the heart of our brand's engineering philosophy from the very beginning," says Dr. David Hon from DAHON. "And the question that has guided our R&D team was straightforward: 'Can a folding bike ride like a road bike?'"

Since DAHON was founded in 1982, the company has focused on addressing the engineering challenges of folding bikes — from frame stiffness and hinge durability to efficient power transfer.

Research and development

It prompted a more rigorous investigation. The company’s R&D team conducted comprehensive tests on more than 40 bikes from various brands to map what separates a flexy folder from a quick one. The output became the Dahon-V tech suite: a test-and-design methodology now applied across the company's folding range.

The engineering work has not gone unnoticed. The Mariner HD earned the d&i Award 2026 at Taipei Cycle Show, and the brand’s ultra-lightweight e-assist folding bike K-Feather took the China Cycle 2024 Gold Award.

"The Dahon-V tech suite is a pioneered method that can truly test the riding stiffness of bike frames."

What Dahon-V measures

"After a period of extensive, rigorous research, we have developed the Dahon-V tech suite,” explains Dr. David Hon, CEO and founder of DAHON. “It is built upon a combination of physics, computerised FEA, and strain gauges. Above all, this is a pioneered method that can truly test the riding stiffness of bike frames."

Dahon-V tech suite includes full tests on frame and seatpost rigidity, overall bike stiffness, and dynamic rocking tests with custom equipment. From the data came two engineering refinements now applied across the company’s folding lineup, enabled by Deltech cable and the Super Downtube. “Dahon-V tech raises frame stiffness of folding bikes by 33%, translating to a real-world riding-speed gain of 5–15%,depending on rider weight, terrain, and wheel size,” Dr. Hon adds.

Since its launch in 2023, the Dahon-V tech suite has been applied across the folding range — mid-fold, tri-fold, and folding e-bikes. The newly launched sub-brand Biceco carries the same Deltech cable architecture.

Mariner Heavy-Duty Series

For a segment often overlooked by folding-bike makers, DAHON has now released its Mariner Heavy Duty Series, with the Mariner HD (20-inch wheels) and Mariner XL (22-inch wheels). Both models support payloads up to 150kg, with frames tested at 50% above standard city-bike loads and 100,000 stress cycles for fatigue validation. The series pairs a Shimano 8-speed drivetrain with disc brakes for predictable handling across urban and mixed terrain.

Dr. Hon concludes: “From the ultra-light e-bike K-Feather to the Mariner heavy-duty folding bike series, Dahon-V reflects one answer to the category's oldest trade-off: between portability and ride quality.”
