TAIPEI, Taiwan - For the second year in a row the Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability (BAS) held a forum during the Taipei Cycle show to update the industry on the progress of the initiatives of its members. This year a focal point was the introduction of human rights code of conduct signed by all 82 members of the BAS to protect workers rights within the bicycle industry in Taiwan. The occasion was somewhat marred later in the day when a protest contradicted the progress being made.

BAVET CITY, Cambodia - EU's biggest bike supplier Cambodia could lose its preferential trading terms. The EU is currently considering a temporary withdrawal of tariff preferences for Cambodia based on human and labor rights criteria. A decision is expected to be announced early in 2020. T

DRESDEN, Germany - After a strong final quarter in 2024, German e-commerce bicycle retailer Bike 24 Holding AG says it has not only confirmed its return to growth, but has also fully achieved its year 2024 profitability target. However, the full results for the 2024 financial year will not be published until March 26.

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The new type-approval for electric bikes became effective on 1 January 2016. Whereas e-bikes with assistance up to 25 km/h and a maximum continuous rated power up to 250 W come with a fairly informal "declaration of conformity", all other electric bicycles that are in the type-approval have to be delivered with a "certificate of conformity", which is fully regulated by the type-approval legislation.

LUXEMBURG - The European Public Prosecutor's Office reports that it has filed two separate indictments at the Court of Antwerp, Belgium for the evasion of customs duties on the importation of e-bikes from China. In both cases they are accused of presenting incorrect customs declarations in order to evade anti-dumping and countervailing duties.

For a long time the bicycle industry has been able to rely on the fact that cycling itself is considered sustainable, but that is changing. Manufacturers across the industry are now examining their own practices and making changes to the production process. Big steps are currently being taken to ensure the industry is set up for a sustainable future.

The cancellation and postponement of leading trade fairs did not deter e-bike component developers from launching next generation products. In this buoyant growth market, product design is only accelerating, despite supply chain constraints as a result of Covid-19. E-bikes give the industry so much confidence that the outlook for the MY2021 is mostly positive.

MADRID, Spain - Bicycle exports from Spain to the rest of the world remain well above pre-pandemic figures and show a positive trade balance, according to provisional data from the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. Although production figures in the country are dipping compared to last year, bicycle production in Spain also remains above the levels achieved in 2019.

BRUSSELS, Belgium - That 2024 was a challenging year for European e-bike markets is no secret. How bad though, is now revealed in the latest EU e-bike import statistics published by Eurostat. The volume of e-bikes imports dropped 27% year-on-year to 642,000 units, slipping below the pre-covid level of 705,000 units in 2019. The import value fared even worse, with a 33% drop year-on-year.

WASHINGTON, US - As the world awaits a year of tariffs and tussles, there was good news for the bicycle market in the US in 2024. The number of non- electric bicycles imported into the country rose again following sharp declines since 2021, the latest US customs data shows. However, with China as the leading supplier, the market remains uncertain.
