Is Romania the place to be for the bicycle industry?

TIMISOARA, Romania - For a long time, Romania was considered the poorhouse of Europe. After the communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, was forced to leave in 1989, there were hopes of a rapid improvement. However, restructuring the economy turned out to be much more difficult. What is the potential to develop the country's bicycle industry? Bike Europe visited a series of companies that made the step to Romania.

Pegas factory taken over by head of Romania's largest online retailer

BUCHAREST, Romania - Andrei Botescu, the founder of bicycle producer Atelierele Pegas, and four other shareholders have sold all their remaining shares in the vintage bicycle brand. Network One Distribution (NOD), which is fully controlled by Iulian Stanciu, CEO of the large Romanian online retailer, has become the sole shareholder of the company.

Europe's biggest bike factory under construction

TIMISOARA, Romania - Aerial footage shows the sheer size of the building process currently taking place in Romania. When construction started last year, it was announced to become Europe's biggest bike factory. It will be operated by Decathlon partner, Sport Mechanical Workshop.

Eastern Europe still in demand as new factories open

WARSAW, Poland - Since production relocation is on the agenda in the e-bike industry, multiple clusters in Eastern Europe have been in the spotlight. Over the past few years some large facilities have been opened, but we have also seen smaller projects successfully investing in the booming e-bike and bicycle market. In the case of Ecoride the anti-dumping duties were the main reason to open-up a factory in Poland, while Atelierele Pegas is a Romanian initiative with the potential to expand into the micro-mobility market.
