Beyond components: Bafang's flexible partnership model

As e-bike competition intensifies, bicycle brands seek more than just components. They need diverse product possibilities, faster development, and reliable service to respond to market shifts. With over 23 years of experience, more than 370 patents, a 5,000+ m² CNAS-accredited laboratory, and over 20 million systems sold worldwide, Bafang has established itself as a stable, long-term partner.

Bafang is one of the few suppliers globally that designs and manufactures a complete drive system fully in-house, including drive units, batteries, displays, and shifting hubs. “This capability allows us to offer a flexible partnership model, enabling brand partners to create differentiated value,” says Gary Xu, the company’s technical director. “We are helping customers reduce development complexity and accelerate product launches.”

Diverse product portfolio

The company offers a diverse product portfolio and a dual-track service system tailored to different sourcing approaches. This flexible model allows bike brands to either deploy a fully integrated, pre-engineered Bafang system or mix and match its parts with third-party components.

“Depending on the track chosen, brands can further customise their operations by opting for direct-to-dealer support managed by us, or a brand-exclusive model in which the brand handles dealer service directly. To mitigate the technical challenges of custom setups, we back these tracks with robust, hands-on engineering and testing support,” says Xu.

Option 1: A complete interconnected system

An interconnected Bafang system comes pre-engineered to work seamlessly together. Brands can install it directly on their bikes. Two optional service programmes are available, allowing brands to choose what best fits their operations:

- Dealer Direct Service (DDS) programme – Bafang provides service directly to dealers. This programme is initiated through mutual agreement with brands to ensure dealer satisfaction. The DDS network now covers the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Poland, Czech Republic, the UK, Italy, and the US.

- Brand-exclusive service programme – Bafang services the brand, and the brand services its dealers.

Option 2: Integrate third-party components as needed

For this approach, Bafang offers system matching support to help reduce integration risks and after-sales issues. The company's laboratory is fully equipped for testing. And a dedicated 20-person technical integration team works directly with customers to validate system performance and support production transitions.

- Brand-exclusive service programme

Due to the complexity of system configuration, the DDS programme is not offered in this option to ensure consistent service quality.

Beyond component supply

'Dedication to Customers' Success' is at the core of the company's values. "From day one, once a project is set up, we sit with our customer, not in a separate room," says Xu. "We are often involved in customers' projects from the early concept stage, advising on feasibility, component selection, and production-ready solutions."

One example is a long-standing partnership that the company has with French rental specialist Arcade, which focuses on robust and connected electric city bikes. "Beyond the riding experience, reliability and low maintenance are critical for our projects. We appreciate the support from Bafang with its innovative products, team know-how and fast response – as we have since 2014, we have grown together," says Frédéric Lucas-Fosse, CEO of Arcade.

Responding to market trends

“The e-bike industry is moving toward greater system integration and smarter technologies. We as a company are continuously increasing our investment in software algorithms and intelligent transmission systems,” explains Xu.

Earlier this year, the H730 motor with 3-speed automatic shifting received the German Design Award 2026, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation. Building on this momentum, at the China Cycle in early May 2026, the company introduced the RG E510. This is a 5-speed auto/manual electronic gear hub that marks the latest addition to the GVT family. The hub integrates with its M210 (city), M410 (trekking) and M430 (cargo) mid motors delivering up to 120Nm of torque, creating an intelligent assistance package that reads rider intention and anticipates the road.

Looking ahead

As the e-bike market continues to evolve, Bafang remains committed to empowering brands with flexible, reliable, and future-ready drive solutions. Through continuous innovation, localised service, and a partnership model built on mutual growth, the company strives to be more than a supplier. It wants to be a long-term partner.
